ok ok, yes as some of you might know (or very few of you O.o) I have redesigned this character so many times > .< but this version I'm pretty happy with. I think before my skill of drawing people wasn't up to the image of Tanaka I had in my head...and this was probably a fluke x.X *dies* originally a character for a manga Ashtoreth and myself were going to do. then it fell over sideways cause we were such n00bs! omg.
anyway...I think she's my favourite character, probably the ONLY one I draw more than once @.@ I'm still working on tattoos, there are a few that have stayed, and I'm working on getting better at weapons x.x so don't bash me for my crap scythe ok? anyway, details of Tanaka follow...
the sketch is kind of blurry cause my frigging pencil tip refused to stay sharp ~.~ *sigh* so I got a bit angry about that and, well, lets just say my pencil is now a lot shorter than it used to be o.o; and I better post this before I pick out the rest of the faults I can see and change my mind.
Art and character belong to me...I be very sad if you steal ;_;
Name: Tanaka (surname unknown)
Age: Unknown
Race: Vampire
Theme: System - Chester Bennington
Personality: Rather a loose cannon on deck, Tanaka's personality can change rapidly. She demonstrates moods which would make the most moody and blood thirsty vampire elder proud, yet at other times she can be obnoxiously happy and outgoing. Although through brief encounters she appears to favour the former of the two.
Appearance: She has black hair, cut short to brush against the collar she wears around her neck; there are several silver-white streaks that course through it, caused as a side effect from her exposure to chemicals in various experiments. A scar beneath her left eye (silver was insterted to the wound from another experiment and the skin did not completely heal over it, giving Tanaka a glittering silver bar beneath her eye), and a pair of wings that appear to be etched down the complete length of her back.
Accessories: A dog tag that hangs from its chain on a belt about her middle, the kanji (japanese symbols) of her name is engraved on the piece of metal, along with an experiment number.
Weapons: Dual bladed scythe, a personally styled and curved blade, delicately elongated nails and fangs.
Abilities: typical vampire abilities - levitation, telepathy, enhanced speed and strength. She has wings from time to time.
History: Tanaka was once a test subject at a high classed facility, discovered as one of the few surviving vampire warriors within a dwindling community in London. She was taken from her mansion home to test as a new battle weapon by an all too curious scientist; her later escape is questioned to be the curious cause of his 'death' - he was found with a pair of holes in his neck, and his body disappeared a few days later.
Hey there! I really dig this drawing and I kind of want to give you crit for it. But you know, a lot of people aren't too welcoming of them, so I was wondering if you were interested in hearing it.
This and the drawing of ~Annomaly's character are my two favorites in your entire gallery. The level of detail, design, gesture, and possibly even anatomy are heads above everything else. The coloring on Charlie the Febbit is great too! Whatever you did in those, keep doing it because I think you're definately on the right track!
A couple of comments though:
-It looks like at least the very bottom of the front boot would be showing just under the scythe blade. Don't leave the feet out because they show that your character is planted on the ground and not simply floating in space.
-Try to steer away from photoshop filters and gradients for a background. They tend to look gaudy and distract from your drawing, which seems to be the focus of your art right now. While this doesn't apply to this particular piece, I noticed that many of the pictures in your gallery simply had a gradient filter background. Always try to think of a setting for you character! Is he or she in a forest, a desert or a blood-stained church? It helps the viewer understand the character believe it or not and pulls them into the picture.
-I really love the prominent collarbone and the chain links! Not really a critical comment, but there’s just something about those parts of the drawing that really appeal to me aesthetically. Thought I’d throw it in.
-Consider bringing more of you drawings to the completed / finished stage, meaning full background, colored, inked if you feel that that’s where the drawing needs to go, etc. Give the viewer more stuff to look at than just a figure. Maybe show us two figures. Maybe show them interacting. What would they be doing? Is there anything going on behind or in front of them? In particular, why is Tanaka looking down the way he is? Did something happen between him and another person? Was someone else on the end of that scythe? As an illustrator, you are storyteller in a way and when you choose to feature a certain character, no matter what he or she is doing there’s a story to be told. Ask yourself questions and show us who your characters are!
-Frankly, I really love the design of this character. It’s just very interesting to look at and I happen to be a sucker for outlandish fantasy character design. ^^
Anyways, thank you for listening to what I have to say and I hope I didn’t sound like a jerk or anything. I really think you have the skill so keep drawing! I’ll be adding you to my watch list!
I'd like to show you some awesome nature related work from more or less unknown artists which deserve more attention - this is a must see, you won't regret it!!!
